Sociology, BA, Social Work Concentration
The Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Human Development & Family Science offers a concentration in Social Work intended for students planning to further their education in clinical sociology and complete graduate studies to earn a Master’s degree in Social Work.
This concentration emphasizes an approach that aims to help people with understanding and addressing their psychological, emotional, and behavioral problems within the context of their family, professional lives, and social circles. It also addresses social hardships at the individual, group, and societal levels. Students may gain knowledge of, and experience in, clinical and community-focused social work practices.
The coursework offered for the social work concentration will help you begin to develop the knowledge and skills needed to identify, evaluate, and address various challenges that individuals face. In addition, it will prepare you to transition into your next level of education where you will be working with a variety of issues which may include, but are not limited to:
- building knowledge in the areas of addiction and substance use
- disability and physical health
- marriage and family
- intimate partner violence
- medical social work
- end of life studies
- research
- law and policy
- military social work
- school social work
- child and family welfare
- environmental issues
- as well as current social issues
Students who are Sociology Majors may declare their concentration with the College of Liberal Arts.
